In the 1990’s DA designed this social enterprise hotel on Beatty Street in downtown Vancouver for the YWCA.  The mission was to provide affordable accommodation with the proceeds financing the delivery of a wide range of YWCA social programs.

Thirty years later DA was asked to design a ten-storey addition above the existing podium.  This consisted of a parking level, meeting rooms and back-of-house areas.  The guest room count increased from 155 to 220 rooms.

The massing of the building addition, steps back from the existing tower facade to maintain the visual emphasis on the original symmetrical building.  This minimises its impact on the neighbouring hotel.  The material and colour selection complement the original building.

The additions cladding and spandrel panels compliment the buildings original buildings mateiality and palette through a contemporary approach.

The staggered massing maintains the rhythm of original massing while also evolving and developing a new language to the design.
