A major grid and two axes forms the structure of the overall master plan of Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey. The orthogonal field and window grid recalls the sectional pattern of rural Surrey. This offers an opportunity to clarify orientation and movement while providing a structure for development and growth.
Functions are arranged outwards from the central plaza in accordance with the intensity of their use. Moving from primary use spaces (such as the library, cafeteria, bookstore) adjacent to the centre through layers of classroom, faculty office and multi-discipline areas, culminating in green space at the extremities.
The buildings of the second phase of the campus coming in a decade later are wrapped around an inner courtyard. They feature a three-storey academic block, a two-storey administration wing, and an exciting new recreational facility. New office and a cafeteria have also been provided for the Student Association.
